BYOD - Bring Your Own Device

A survey covering 17 countries by business technology company Avanade found that 88% of executives said employees were using their own personal computing technologies for business purposes. Really? Even though most company policies forbid personal equipment for company use, 88% of executives say it is occurring on a regular basis. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-17017570?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter

Virtual Desktops provide an organization the ability to control company assets and information by bringing those assets under a single point of administrative control while still offering the same experience to customers across various device platforms. WMware View client is a perfect example of how seamless a Windows 7 experience can be extended across various operating systems and personal devices. Recent testing in I-O labs showed that operating a WMware Win7 experience on and iPad is definitely worth considering and is very productive. Mouse click functions, drill downs, word .doc editing and spreadsheets are all very easy to perform and even more so with a wireless keyboard attached to the iPad.

We expect this concept of Bringing Your Own Device (BYOD) to the table to be the next wave of the IT and Virtual Desktop evolution, thus keeping information secure in the cloud, and enabling mobile devices of all types to be productivity tools instead of just toys. Virtual Desktops also separates employer/employee information and reduces risk associated with Compliance and Ownership of 'information.'

If we were building an enterprise network from scratch today, we would create virtual desktops (VDI) for all and require that they be used for all company business/transactions regardless of which device being used.

Windows 7 on an iPad?

How can this be? As desktop virtualization becomes more adopted and mainstream, manufacturers are finding new and creative ways to support a variety of devices.  This is just about one of the coolest things we have seen in a while.  Once again VMWare pushes the envelope and let's us know how good their products really are.

For any business with a mobile workforce this should be carefully considered as part of their productivity initiatives.

Short Codes, Tags, & QR Codes

If you are new to the mobile marketing and advertising space you will quickly learn that a SmartPhones are making a run at standard industry processes.  The intelligence and compute power of these small devices is increasing exponentially. As such, we are seeing the ability to use them in ways never before seen.  For example, they can act as a bar code scanner and provide product and price information.  So what is a Shortcode or a QR Code? A Shortcode is nothing more than a phone number; it just doesn't have 10 digits like other numbers hence it's called short. Shortcodes are used for specific purposes, mainly to move Text Messages back and forth. A QR code is small digital image than when scanned (similar to a bar code) it activates a process, whether it be dialing a phone number, launch a web page, etc.  Short and QR Codes working together can provide a pretty robust marketing platform to enable retailers or anyone marketing a retail product to provide other means to see, view, learn, buy, etc. that product. TAG's are the same as QR Codes, but Microsoft proprietary or their version of the same thing with a little different look and some color added to make it look nice.  Bottom line, if you own a SmartPhone you might want to download a free QR Code and/or TAG scanner to begin scanning these codes wherever you go.  You might even be asked to Text a Keyword to a Shortcode and join an exclusive club of members that are interested in certain products for services.  Here's a simple QR Code as an Example.
